Bluetongue Meeting

Thursday May 15th at The Red Lion Inn -Todwick
(near Rotherham, just off the M1 junction 31)

Chris Oura from Pirbright - will be speaking on Bluetongue and the midge, a fascinating presentation well worth hearing. Rob Ankcorn will then update us on vaccination.

Andrew Gresham will be briefing us on developments re scrapie, and we should by that time be able to give an update on the SMS scheme. 

Sue Smith - will be talking on the cost of rearing kids, 

Nick Perkins - will be telling us about an ectopic pregnancy

Nick Brandon - will talk about his experience of how to tackle lameness in a large goat herd. One other speaker is yet to be confirmed.

Introductory Workshops 2008
April - May - June  


The BDAA is offering a series of introductory workshops across the country for all farmers and gardeners who are interested in developing their organic system and enhancing the health and vitality of their crops and livestock.

Each one is led by an experienced practitioner who can demonstrate the key principles involved in a practical hands on way.

Topics covered include: 

  • Biodynamic concept of the farm, 

  • soil and compost treatment, 

  • the use of biodynamic sprays, 

  • the planting calendar, 

  • quality and Demeter standards.

Participants should bring suitable outdoor clothing and a packed lunch. Cost for the day is £30.00 - £25.00 conc.
Workshops will take place from 10.00am – 17.30pm.

20th Low Level Radiation and Health Conference

Nuclear energy – radiation risks re-visited

6th to 8th June  2008

This conference has been held since 1985, when a group of concerned residents living near the River Severn questioned what might be happening in their environment to give rise to an excess of childhood leukæmia. Epidemiologists and statisticians were invited to share their insight with lay members of the general public rather than with other experts.

International and UK experts will talk about Radiation-induced bystander effects, Cancer and non-cancer in Japanese A-bomb survivors, Radiation-induced pregnancy Effects, Radiation Protection, Discharges, Managing Radioactive Wastes and Updates on Nuclear Policy and Legislation.

Cumbria Steam Gathering - 2008

This year the 2008 Cumbria Steam Gathering is as huge as ever with more than 1,200 catalogued classic exhibits, a traditional fair, displays, specialist caterers and crafts.

 

Enjoy a colourful  weekend summer event that has a whole host of entertainment, with majestic steam engines and commercial vehicles of yesterday, as well as hundreds of classic transport favourites like cars, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural and industrial tractors, farm equipment and stationary engines.

 

This family day out also has plenty to keep the children entertained with a Punch and Judy show, Magic Shows, miniature remote controlled car racing and the traditional fairground boasting vintage rides and attractions that are well over 60 years old.

This years headlining entertainment is provided by the City of Coventry Corps of Drums. Formed in 1947 they have become one of the most famous and respected youth marching bands in the country, with appearances throughout the UK and overseas. They have also had the honour and distinction of playing for all the senior members of the Royal Family including Her Majesty the Queen.

 

Tim Holt from Hutton Roof near Carnforth was one of the club’s founding members. He was chief steward at the very first Cumbria Steam Gathering and is now the event’s main organiser heading a team of 10 which themselves lead almost 500 volunteers.

 

Tim said “My enthusiasm for this wonderful event has never waned, even after all these years. After last years downpours I have ordered some better weather! This year’s show promises to be a fantastic weekend with marquees full of working models, fascinating automobilia and enthusiasts who are happy to share their collections with other enthusiasts as well as regular favourites like the huge craft tent with demonstrations throughout the weekend.”

 

With wheel chair accessible toilets and parking for blue badge holders, the Cumbria Steam Gathering also provides wristbands, free of charge, for toddlers throughout the event, in case of separation.

 

The Society endeavours to provide many different catering outlets including cuisines from around the world, offering healthy eating.  There are fully licensed bar areas making the Cumbria Steam Gathering the perfect way to taste the sights, sounds and smells of a nostalgic family weekend in Cumbria.

Car parking is free!

 

Admission prices are: Adults £10, 

Senior Citizens £7,

Accompanied children under 16 are free. 

There are discounts available for coach parties.

Land Registry Guidence

Land registration experts will be explaining the benefits of voluntary land registration at a range of rural and agricultural events throughout England and Wales this year.
