Report on GM Crops Vigil

Thank you for all your help over the months - without your support the winter would have been longer, darker and colder than it actually was!

The Vigil has been present for 9 months now and we have nearly 5000 signatures (and still increasing) on the petition.

The issue has been discussed by the Transport & Environment committee in the Scottish parliament where we won the vote to have the trial crop at Munlochy pulled up. However, the Minister, Ross Finnie, refused to do this on the grounds of not having the power, when in fact he DOES have the power (Environmental Protection Act 1990, Section VI, Article 111/10).

The Labour/Lib Dem executive then 'whipped' the T&E committee so that no further evidence would be taken (due to lack of time and too much work for the clerks!).

The Petition will now be referred to the Health committee - we are waiting to hear when that will happen. In the meantime, there is a debate in the Scottish parliament on 29th May to end GM trials - please lobby as many MSPs as possible asking them to vote to end the trials. (Tel 0131 348 5000 or MSP names and contact details can be found at:

http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/msps/msps.html)

The Vigil has planning permission for at least a further 3 months and any funding to enable this would be most helpful. We would be extremely grateful for any donations (large or small!) towards the continued cost of running the Vigil. The campaign is at such a crucial stage at the moment - we need your help to continue.

Please send donations to: Munlochy Vigil, Roskill, Munlochy, Ross-shire IV8 8PA
(Cheques should be made payable to Munlochy Vigil Support).

Thank you.
